The National Peasant’s Party has announced the death of Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District.
In a statement posted today, NPP Secretary General Ssentongo Sharif said:
“NPP has received the sad news for the death of one of the members of parliament Hellen Nakimuli, the Woman MP for Kalangala district. Tribute to the nation, family and the National Unity Platform, your honorable work to this nation shall always be remembered. May the Angles of God receive you in eternal peace.”
NPP: A Voice for Rural Uganda
The National Peasant’s Party positions itself as a grassroots political movement championing the rights of smallholder farmers, fisherfolk, and rural communities. Founded to advance agrarian interests and equitable land policy, the party has in recent years built alliances with other opposition and civic formations to amplify issues affecting Uganda’s agricultural base.
NPP leaders say the party maintains a policy of solidarity with legislators across the political spectrum who advance rural development, food security, and anti-corruption causes — areas in which Hon. Nakimuli was active. While Nakimuli was elected on the National Unity Platform ticket, NPP noted her work aligned with the party’s core concerns in island districts like Kalangala.
Secretary General Ssentongo Sharif described her as a “member of parliament” whose efforts reflected the struggles of ordinary Ugandans. “The peasant community of this country has lost a friend,” a party official told Eastafricaobserver. “NPP extends condolences to the nation, to her family, and to the National Unity Platform.”
Hon. Nakimuli’s Service
Hon. Nakimuli represented Kalangala District in the 11th Parliament as a member of NUP. Born on 2 July 1985 in Lukuba village, Kyamuswa sub-county, she was the daughter of Rev. Father Christopher Walusimbi and former district councillor Maria Nalwanga Walusimbi.
A Makerere University alumna, her leadership began at St. Augustine Secondary School where she served as head girl. She defeated Aidah Nabayiga to become Kalangala District Woman MP. Within NUP, she served as Head of Communication and Anti-Corruption and was popularly known in her constituency as the “pearl of Kalangala”.
Tributes from colleagues and island residents described her as a vocal advocate for health services, transport safety, and youth programs in the hard-to-reach Ssese Islands.
East Africa Observer hasn’t verified the cause of death, but Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of NUP, posted that Nakimuli had died following an unsuccessful surgery.
