National Unity Platform President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu posted:
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of our comrade, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala and Shadow Minister for Information. She died following an unsuccessful surgery. Hon. Nakimuli was a courageous, dedicated leader who served her people and our struggle with distinction. Service to Kalangala
Hon. Nakimuli was elected as Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District on the National Unity Platform ticket. Born on 2 July 1985 in Lukuba village, Kyamuswa sub-county, she was the daughter of Rev. Father Christopher Walusimbi and former district councillor Maria Nalwanga Walusimbi.
She attended Bukasa Primary School, Hormisdallen Primary School in Bweyogerere, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Gayaza, and St. Augustine Secondary School in Wakiso, where she served as head girl. She later joined Makerere University.
Before joining Parliament in 2021, Nakimuli served as a Community Development Officer in Bukebe, Bufumira, and Mazinga sub-counties of Kalangala District. In the House, she served as Shadow Minister for Fisheries and NUP’s Head of Communication and Anti-Corruption. In her constituency, she was popularly known as the “pearl of Kalangala” for her work on health access, transport safety, and youth programs across the Ssese Islands.
Mpuuga: “Young, Energetic, and Hardworking”
Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Rt. Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba described Nakimuli’s death as “shocking” and “devastating.” In a tribute, he remembered her as young, energetic, and hardworking, with determination to improve lives in the Ssese Islands.
Mpuuga noted that leaders who worked with her during her time as CDO in Kalangala saw a promising leader and supported her bid for Parliament in 2021. He recalled her service in his shadow cabinet as Shadow Minister for Fisheries, where she was outspoken on issues affecting fishing communities and lake safety. He described her as peaceful, principled, and never vengeful, and thanked God for her life as a leader and sportswoman.
He extended condolences to her father, Owek. Rev. Fr Christopher Walusimbi, the Orthodox Faith she professed, and the people of Ssese whom she served.
Parliament said burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.
